Sustainability

Our journey to reaching Net Zero

At the Heart of Yorkshire Education Group, we recognise our responsibility to take bold, meaningful action on climate change. Our commitment to sustainability is rooted in our vision to lead by example - embedding climate action into every aspect of Collgege life, from our campuses and operations to our curriculum and community engagement.

How we’re reaching Net Zero

13%

Cutting Carbon

Reduced carbon emissions by 13%.

100%

Nothing to Waste

Diverted 100% of operational waste from landfill.

41

Waste and Emit Less

225 tonnes of waste processed - saving 41 tonnes of CO2.

61,000

Powered by the Sun

61,000 kWh of energy generated from PV arrays.

4

Driving change

Integrated four electric vans and cars into our fleet.

Supply Chain Sustainability School

We’re proud to partner with the Supply Chain Sustainability School, joining over 200 industry leaders to push the built environment toward a more sustainable future. This empowers our staff and students to engage and improve their sustainability skills and knowledge. We support the School by funding its resources to enable our supply chain to access free content, enabling them to deliver more sustainable projects with us.

Creating Ecofriendly Estates

We are making our estates ecofriendly by reducing our waste, energy and water consumption and have achieved zero landfill across our three Colleges. We are working closely with HI Group and Trident as we embark on the next stages of our decarbonisation journey, adopting more sustainable energy strategies to reduce both our carbon emissions and operating costs.

UN Sustainable Development Goals

We’ve aligned our curriculum with the 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – a globally-agreed, shared blueprint for a better world by 2030. By mapping where and how SDGs are delivered across our courses, we ensure learners are engaged in sustainability education. This approach supports both staff and student development and embeds the SDGs throughout our teaching.

Green Skills for Green Jobs

Although sustainability is embedded into all of our curriculum, we have developed a range of Green Skills courses. Covering topics like Carbon Capture and Storage, Heat Recovery, Groundworks and Pipelaying and Fenestration, these programmes equip learners with the technical skills needed to work with key green technologies or enter high-demand sectors.

Collaboration is Key

We’ve joined over 3,000 schools, colleges and nurseries in supporting Let’s Go Zero - a national campaign uniting education providers in climate action. We’re also collaborating with S4FE, the Association of Colleges, the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges, Yorkshire Learning Providers, and Climate Commissioner Steve Frampton to strengthen our commitment to sustainability.

Sustainability Week

We host our own Sustainability Week to inspire students and staff to take part in eco-friendly activities and show how small changes can make a big difference. This year’s events included recycling and upcycling workshops, tree planting, clothes swap shops, meat-free days, sustainability pledges, and more.

Our Climate Action Plan

Our Climate Action Plan sets out how we will embed sustainability across all areas of college life, whilst preparing students and communities for a low-carbon future.
