Course Overview

Mechatronics maintenance technicians carry out a broad range of activities which may include installation, testing, fault finding, rectification, modifications and the on-going planned maintenance of complex automated equipment. This requires the application of a blend of skills, knowledge and occupational behaviours across the electrical, electronic, mechanical, fluid power and control systems disciplines..

The broad purpose of the occupation is to ensure that plant and equipment perform to the required standard to facilitate targets regarding safety, quality, delivery, availability and cost within the aerospace, aviation, automotive, logistics, defence and wider advanced manufacturing and engineering sectors. Multi-skilled mechatronics maintenance technicians carry out a broad range of activities which may include installation, testing, fault finding, rectification, modifications and the on-going planned maintenance of complex automated equipment. This requires the application of a blend of skills, knowledge and occupational behaviours across the electrical, electronic, mechanical, fluid power and control systems disciplines. They prepare for the maintenance activity and inform stakeholders of work status. They also complete documentation, handover work, set up their work area and are required to be competent in safe engineering practices for their own safety and those around them. They may be required to work shifts, to work at height and in confined spaces, as well as dealing with equipment which may contain high voltages, high pressures, ionising radiation and other hazards.

The course is delivered by a mixture of theory and practical work, both at College and in the workplace.

What You Will Study

Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge) or Pearson BTEC NVQ 3 Engineering Maintenance

The apprentice will have a depth and breadth of English and mathematics that allow them to operate successfully within their role. This may be met through entry criteria determined by the employer or qualifications and training within the apprenticeship. There will still be a requirement for 19+ students to attempt Maths and English at L2 if they do not have exemptions due the entry requirements for the BTEC qualification

  • Attendance Expectations

A mixture of day release and employer based.

  • How You Will Be Assessed

There will be continuous assessment of both your practical skills and theoretical knowledge.

  • Entry Requirements

Candidates must have an employer willing to support the requirements of the apprenticeship standard.

Individual employers will set the selection criteria for their apprentices.

Most candidates will have achieved GCSEs at Grade 9-4 in English and Maths and a STEM - related subject at Level 2 prior to commencement of apprenticeship.

If you do not have these, we can assess your current level of English/Maths.

Only apprentices who began their apprenticeship training when aged 16-18 will continue to be subject to the mandatory requirement to study towards and achieve English and maths. Apprentices who began their apprenticeship training when aged 19+ will no longer be subject to the mandatory requirement to study towards and achieve English and maths. However, for apprentices aged 19+, the apprentice or their employer can still choose for the apprentice to study towards an English and maths qualification. We will continue to fund those apprentices that wish to study towards an English and maths qualification. There will still be a requirement for 19+ students to attempt Maths and English at L2 due the entry requirements for the BTEC qualifications
