Course Overview

This course is for students who want to learn new skills, gain confidence and prepare for their next steps. It is a good choice for learners who enjoy practical activities, working with others and learning in a friendly, supportive setting. You do not need to be confident to start this course, helping you grow in confidence is part of what the course is about.
You will learn through a mix of practical work, group activities and teacher led lessons. Teachers explain things clearly and break work down into small steps. You will practise skills often and get support when you need it. Learning may include projects, real life examples, visits and work related activities to help you understand how your learning links to the real world.

As well as learning subject skills, you will develop important life and work skills. These include communication, teamwork, problem solving and managing your time. You will also learn how to work independently, follow instructions and take pride in your work. By the end of the course, you should feel more confident, better prepared for the future, and ready to move on to further study, training or employment.

What You Will Study

You will study different units on this course. Each unit helps you build skills for learning, work and everyday life. The course is practical and helps you learn step by step.

Units may include:

  • Skills for Learning
    Learn how to listen, follow instructions and ask for help. You will practise staying focused, organising your work and building confidence in lessons.
  • Team Challenge
    Work with other students to complete group tasks. You will learn how to share ideas, take turns, communicate clearly and work together as part of a team.
  • Going on a Visit
    Take part in a planned visit linked to the course. You will learn how to prepare for a visit, behave safely and professionally, and talk about what you have learned afterwards.
  • Responding to a Situation
    Learn how to deal with different situations at college, at work or in everyday life. You will practise making decisions, staying calm and choosing the right actions.
  • Problem Solving
    Learn how to look at a problem, think of solutions and try them out. You will practise not giving up and learning from mistakes.
  • Managing Time
    Learn how to arrive on time, meet deadlines and plan your day. You will practise breaking tasks into small steps and managing your workload.

Your teacher will support you throughout each unit. Work is explained clearly, and you will get plenty of chances to practise and improve. You will review your progress regularly to help you see how much you are learning.

  • Attendance Expectations

    This course runs on set days each week and it is important that you attend all sessions.

    Good attendance is very important. Coming to college on time and every week helps you:

    • Keep up with your learning
    • Build confidence
    • Achieve your qualification

    If you cannot attend, you must let the college know as soon as possible. Support is available if you are finding attendance difficult.

  • How You Will Be Assessed

    There are no exams on this course. Assessment is practical and based on the work you complete during lessons.
    You will be assessed by:

    • Completing tasks and activities in class
    • Taking part in group work and challenges
    • Showing your skills during practical activities
    • Talking about what you have learned with your teacher
    • Keeping evidence of your work, such as worksheets, photos or short written tasks

    Your teacher will support you throughout the course. They will explain what you need to do and help you improve your work. You will get regular feedback so you know how you are doing and what to work on next.

    Assessment is done step by step, at your pace. You will have plenty of chances to practise and improve before work is marked as complete.

  • Entry Requirements

    No qualifications are needed for this course however a commitment to attending all days of the study programme is a must.

  • Further Study

    After completing this course, you may choose to move on to further learning at college.

    You could progress to:

    • Another college course at a higher level
    • A vocational or work related course
    • A course that helps you prepare for employment, training or an apprenticeship
