Course Overview

This occupation will involve carrying out advanced skilled work in either a construction site or a workshop, mainly using timber products to create and install building components. Advanced carpenters and joiners are able to undertake complex jobs that require high levels of practical skills and knowledge.

This apprenticeship has two pathways:

  • Advanced Site Carpenter– usually working on a building site or in domestic and commercial premises.
  • Advanced Architectural Joiner– normally working in a workshop.

Apprenticeships give you the opportunity to work for a real employer, earn a real salary and gain a real qualification whilst gaining valuable workplace skills and experience. If you are aged 16 or above, are driven to succeed in a particular industry and are willing to commit yourself to training and study, then an Apprenticeship could be the right career move for you.

What You Will Study

The apprentice will learn, work, earn and achieve a qualification all at the same time.

To achieve the apprenticeship they will complete the following:

  • An industry designed and recognised apprenticeship
  • End Point Assessment (Knowledge Assessment and Practical Assessment)

The apprentice will work towards the following Functional Skills:

  • Mathematics up to Level 2
  • English up to Level 2

Learners who have already achieved GCSEs (A-C or equivalent) in Maths and English may be exempt from Functional Skills.

The apprenticeship is mainly work based, with one day per week in college. 

The apprentice may also be required to attend College for functional skills if needed.

Day release typically Monday or Friday

Gateway requirements are

  • achieved English and mathematics qualifications in line with the apprenticeship funding rules
  • you must submit a portfolio of evidence
  •  passed BWF approved Site Right Fire Door Installation Awareness/ or Level 3 Award in Fire Door Safety.

To complete EPA
You will complete a multiple-choice test
You will complete a multiple-choice test. It will be closed book, meaning you will not have access to any books or reference materials. In the test you can have:
scientific calculator
pen and paper
The test administrator should provide this equipment in readiness for the test.
The test will have 40 multiple-choice questions. You will have 70 minutes to complete it..

You will then complete a practical assessment

Practical assessment with questions
You will be observed by an independent assessor completing a set of tasks. It will last 12 hours. They will ask you at least 6 questions.
Finally you will complete an interview to demonstrate underpinned knowledge. This will be completed with an independent assessor. It will last at least 90 minutes. They will ask you at least 10 questions. The questions will be about certain aspects of your occupation. You need to compile a portfolio of evidence before the EPA gateway. You can use it to help answer the questions.

There are no formal entry requirements for an apprenticeship (unless an employer stipulates any themselves) however all potential apprentices will undertake a basic Maths and English assessment prior to enrolment.

Upon completion of the Apprenticeship, the Apprentice may progress into employment within the sector or complete further studies related to their area of work.
