Course Overview
This Level 3 Engineering Maintenance Technician (Dual Discipline) apprenticeship is ideal for practical, curious individuals who enjoy problem-solving and want to develop a broad skill set across both electrical and
mechanical or control and instrumentation engineering. Typically lasting around 48 months, the course offers a highly engaging blend of hands-on workplace learning, supported by day-release study and regular assessor visits, giving apprentices real exposure to maintaining and improving live engineering plant and equipment across industries such as manufacturing, energy, and utilities.
Through a mix of on-the-job experience and guided learning, apprentices build strong technical expertise while also developing wider transferable skills such as confidence, communication, teamwork, and critical thinking. Working both independently and alongside experienced engineers, learners gain resilience and leadership capabilities as they respond to faults, contribute to continuous improvement, and interact with a range of stakeholders. This well-rounded approach not only prepares apprentices for successful careers in engineering but also supports progression into senior technical and supervisory roles.
What You Will Study
Apprentices will build a strong foundation of technical and professional skills, including:
- Core Knowledge and Skills
- Understanding engineering principles, tools, and maintenance techniques
- Fault finding, diagnosis, and effective problem-solving
- Interpreting engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation
- Working safely in line with health, safety, and environmental regulations
- Electrical: circuits, motors, control panels, and electrical system maintenance
- Mechanical: assemblies, hydraulics, pneumatics, and rotating machinery
These skills equip apprentices to maintain and optimise complex engineering systems across a wide range of industries.
Alongside this, you will work towards a L3 Pearson BTEC Diploma Advanced Manufacturing Engineering delivered on a day-release basis, combined with a work-based Level 3 NVQ Diploma.
Delivered on a day-release basis at Castleford College, complemented by regular workplace visits from an assessor.
You will be assigned a dedicated work-based assessor upon enrolment, who will carry out regular workplace visits to review your progress, observe your practice, and provide support to help you successfully complete your apprenticeship.
Ideally, candidates should have achieved a Grade 4 or above in GCSE Maths and English, or hold an equivalent Level 2 qualification. You must also be employed in a relevant role with an employer who is able to support you throughout the programme.
