"Choosing to study my PGCE at the University Centre was the perfect option for me because it offered the flexibility to fit around my work and family life.
At the time, I was teaching at HMP Wakefield Men's Prison, and I now teach at the women's prison, so the course hours worked well alongside my role. I was already teaching professionally, but I wanted to gain a recognised qualification that would validate my experience and help me progress throughout my career.
The course gave me valuable skills in tracking and recording learner progress and helped me understand the different ways people learn.
Graduating is something I feel incredibly proud of. As a mum of three young children, balancing family life, work and studying was no easy feat. Much of my coursework was completed in my spare time, so there's also a huge sense of relief now that I've achieved it.
The support I received from my tutor, Sally Brown, was fantastic and really helped me throughout my studies. Looking ahead, I plan to complete a QTLS top-up qualification to open up even more opportunities in the future. Alongside teaching, I continue to run my own sewing workshops, which reflect a lifelong passion that started with my Fashion Degree at the University of Huddersfield. My dream is to one day build my own teacher training business.
My advice to anyone considering Higher Education is simple - just do it!"
