Pupils from Across the District Visit Heart of Yorkshire Education Group to Spark Inspiration and Get a Taste of Student Life

This month, the Group has welcomed thousands of students from a range of age groups to experience college life and discover the facilities and subjects available at the Heart of Yorkshire Education Group.

Selby College hosted two Discovery Days with local primary school students from Barwic Parade, Longman’s Hill, Barkston Ash and Athelstan, who had the opportunity to try out a range of activities in different subject areas.

The sessions were designed to show students the possibilities for future careers and study, with students learning about everything from coding to beauty therapy to plumbing, teambuilding and podcasting.

Selby College is a learning provider of the Children’s University, a charity that works in partnership with schools to develop a love of learning in children and contribute to schools’ enrichment agendas.

Wakefield College, Castleford College and Selby College have also recently hosted Year 10 Taster Days for local pupils, giving them the opportunity to explore a range of subjects they may wish to study in the future while experiencing life and the atmosphere at the colleges.

Year 10s who visited Wakefield College engaged in a variety of sessions including textiles, music recording, baking, games development and World Cup-themed activities among others.

Selby College also recently hosted a STEM Day for Year 9 students who are passionate about subjects relating to Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.

There were various sessions provided by Selby College staff, including Chemistry, Physics and Pneumatics. Professionals from Drax and Clear Quality also delivered industry-focused sessions, giving students an insight into how these subjects are applied in the workplace. Activities included a water purification session led by Clear Quality and an aerodynamics workshop delivered by Drax.

We hope these experiences have given them a real insight into college life, whilst helping them discover new subjects, interests and potential career paths for the future. These activities not only broaden horizons but can also be logged towards students' accumulated hours of learning activities, recognising the value of learning beyond the classroom. We look forward to welcoming many of these students back to our colleges in the years ahead as they take the next steps in their educational journey.”
