Selby College’s Art & Design students are working with Up for Yorkshire and Our Zero Selby to host a free Sustainable Fashion Show at Selby Abbey, celebrating local charity shops across the town.

Open to the public, the charity shop fashion show will take place on Wednesday 12th November from 5pm at Selby Abbey as part of the Shop For The Future initiative. The free event promises welcome drinks and nibbles, information stalls, exhibitions and a fashion show – with sustainable, pre-loved fashion at the heart of it all.

Selby College students will be exhibiting their work, ranging from upcycled fashion, 3D outcomes made from items provided by local charity shops and documentary photography. Attendees will be treated to a runway show featuring on-trend wardrobes curated entirely from local second-hand shops, demonstrating how pre-loved fashion can be both stylish and planet-friendly.

Elaine Whitehead, Curriculum Development Manager for Art & Design at Selby College, said: “Being a part of this local and sustainable initiative is important to us as we are always trying to incorporate sustainability into our practice at Selby College. Second-hand shops around Selby have already kindly donated items to our students which they have been using in their various projects – both reducing waste and stimulating our students’ creativity. The show is a great opportunity to showcase this whilst building their confidence as artists.”

Part of Up For Yorkshire, Our Zero Selby’s mission is to inspire local action on climate change, giving people the opportunity to be involved in practical and sustainable projects that help contribute to the transition to Net Zero.

The Shop For The Future initiative, supported by David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire and funded by York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority, aims to inspire a grass roots sustainable fashion movement in Selby by uplifting local, second-hand shops to promote waste reduction and upcycling.

The campaign celebrates the growth of Vinted, Depop and Facebook Marketplace and the benefits of buying ‘pre-loved’ items, as a starting point to attract more visitors and shoppers to Selby – putting the high street and its fourteen charity shops in the spotlight.

Claire Hetherington, Our Zero Selby Lead, said: "Our wonderful charity shops and Selby College students are proving that pre-loved fashion is not only a fantastic way to express your personal style, but also a powerful choice for a more sustainable future. By joining us, you're not just attending a fabulous event – you're supporting great causes and making a positive impact. We are so excited to meet the many people in our community who are passionate about sustainable fashion."
