Selby College’s Art, Design & Media students are showcasing their work at two exhibitions in June, to celebrate the end of a successful academic year. Open to the public, these showcases will display an array of student artwork from sculptures to photography and painting.
The End of Year Show will take place on Thursday 11th June, 6-8pm at Selby College and will feature artwork created by students from all levels. Visitors can expect to see model making, drawing, painting, interior design, photography, film and TV show reels displayed throughout the College’s art department building.
The department invites family, friends and the public to discover the students’ innovative ideas, support emerging creatives and experience the breadth of the work produced over the year, whilst enjoying some refreshments.
BA (Hons) Art, Design & Media students will also be hosting their annual BA Degree Show launch event on Thursday 18th June, 6pm-8pm at Selby Abbey, with the exhibition running from 19th-25th June.
The BA Degree Show will feature an array of contemporary work from student artists who study degree-level Art, Design & Media at Selby College’s University Centre and invites Selby Abbey visitors to enjoy and interact with the exhibition.
The College’s Art & Design students have been involved in a range of exciting projects this year including installing their own exhibition and embarking on a trip to Paris.
With sustainability a focus for the Heart of Yorkshire Education Group, Level 3 and Higher Education Art & Design students have been inspired to encompass eco-friendly pieces within their own work, helping to spark conversation surrounding renewable practices. To showcase their creations, students have worked in collaboration with McArthur Glen Designer Outlet York to hold a month-long exhibition for the public. Displayed to the thousands of visitors that pass through the shopping centre each month, students were able to gain real-life experience in presenting their work to an audience.
Elaine Whitehead, Curriculum Development Manager for Art, Design & Media at Selby College said: “To enhance their professional development, we ensure that all our Higher Education Art, Design & Media students have the opportunity to exhibit their artwork beyond our campus. This expands their experience in working to a real-life client brief, whilst also boosting their confidence in creating conversational public pieces of art.”
Not only have students been showcasing their work at exhibitions, but their artwork has also contributed towards Selby Station’s regeneration programme. Level 1 and 2 Art students had the opportunity to create a range of vibrant artwork panels which celebrate Selby’s railway history.

As students remain heavily involved in the local area, it is also important that they gain inspiration from further afield. Higher Education students recently enjoyed a fascinating trip to Paris to immerse themselves in the rich culture that the city has to offer. As they visited a wide range of historical sites, galleries and museums students experienced the artistic atmosphere of the city, helping to reflect on their own work in the classroom.
