Sustainability Week Banner

From Monday 16th March to Friday 20th March the Group is celebrating its Sustainability Week across all three Colleges, seeing students participate in sustainable activities and learning throughout the week. Take a look at what the Group got up to:

Community Wardrobes 👕👖

Staff and students across the Group organised 'community wadrobes' at each College whereby people brought in pre-loved clothes and swapped them with someone else's! Leading up to Sustainability Week, clothes donations were made for the community wardrobe so they could function like real shops.

The Big Bird Watch🐦

Staff and students from the Group took part in a Big Bird Watch! With new bird feeders implemented across the campuses, we have been seeing more birds populating our green areas. The community have set up a Group-wide padlet for bird sightings within the college grounds, logging its species and how many were seen. So far this has included black birds, wood pigeons, blue tits, robins, wrens and more...

T Level Childcare Students Grow Sustainability Skills with Grass Seed Gardens

As part of our ongoing initiative to educate learners about sustainability, our T Level Childcare students have been getting hands-on with an exciting eco‑friendly project.

Students created their very own grass seed gardens using fully recycled tubs. The activity encouraged learners to think creatively about re‑use and the importance of reducing waste, whilst also giving them a fun, practical way to nurture something over time.

The group loved bringing their mini‑gardens to life and we can’t wait to see the grass begin to grow over the coming weeks. A huge well done to everyone involved in this lovely piece of work!

Alternative Curriculum Students Sustainable Thank‑You Project

Wakefield Alternative Curriculum students turned recycled materials into thoughtful gifts for local businesses. Using pop bottles, fabric scraps (rag‑ragged into flowers) and textured paper offcuts, learners created colourful vases labelled “Business Appreciation” and “From Wakefield College AC.”

Once completed, the group delivered the handmade vases to small businesses across Wakefield as a simple, sustainable way to show gratitude and community support.

Sustainability Week Sparks Big Ideas Across the Group💡

Sustainability isn’t just something we talk about – it’s embedded in everything we do. With green skills becoming increasingly essential for the future workforce, learners from across the Group have been stepping up to the challenge!

During Sustainability Week, learners had the chance to unleash their creativity and pitch their own sustainable solutions. From innovative low‑carbon concepts to ideas that could transform how we live, travel and use resources, it was inspiring to see just how imaginative (and competitive!) our learners can be.

The winning teams will now go on to represent their College at the first-ever Yorkshire WorldSkills Sustainability Competition – a fantastic opportunity to showcase their big ideas on a regional stage.

Repurposing ♻️

During the week's GOALS lessons, students have been repurposing pre-loved items and making something new from them.
