Wakefield College Healthcare Students Secure Jobs with Local NHS Trust

Several Healthcare students from Wakefield College have secured jobs at Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust after completing their studies.

The nine students have all been studying on the T Level Health course at the College – a technical alternative to an A Level which gives them gain hands-on experience through their industry placement, combining both classroom and practical theory.

Many students carried out their work placements with the NHS at the local hospital, Pinderfields in Wakefield, where they supported departments across the centre. The 40-hour work placement enables students to gain experience working with patients, developing clinical and patient care skills to prepare them for careers in the sector.

Emma Gregory, Matron for the Professional Development and Education at Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust said: “We are incredibly proud of this year’s cohort of T Level students, and it’s wonderful to hear that eight of them have secured permanent positions at the Trust. We have worked hard to create a robust induction programme, enabling our placement students to actively take part in patient care. This means they can work alongside our existing workforce to support daily living activities, whilst gaining valuable real-life experience as they embark on their careers in healthcare.”

T Level student, Madeleine, worked as Care Home Assistant on her work placement where she looked after the elderly and is now progressing to work fulltime as a Healthcare Support Worker with the Trust.

Madeleine said: “I chose to study the T Level Health programme because of the opportunity to do work experience. I think it’s the best way to get into nursing which is what I want to do in the future. I’m looking forward to beginning training for my new role over summer.”

T Level Health student, Nancy, completed her placement hours at the spinal injuries department and A&E where she gained valuable experience. Nancy will be returning to Pinderfields Hospital as a Healthcare Support Worker alongside her peers.

Some students are taking on part-time roles with the Trust alongside university studies including Michaela who said: “I had the opportunity to work both in Pinderfields Hospital’s Respiratory Medicine department and in a GP surgery as part of my industry placement. At Pinderfields Hospital, I was supporting patients with lung illnesses such as pneumonia and cancer. I’ll be returning to work at the hospital as a Healthcare Support Worker alongside studying Midwifery at the University of Leeds which I’m really excited for.”

Another student set for university is Isobel, who said: “The thing I enjoyed most about studying T Level Health was going on placement and building relationships with patients. My tutors have been supportive, and I’ve built my confidence a lot on this course. Now that I’ve finished, I am planning on studying Mental Health Nursing and Adult Nursing at the University of Derby.”

Within its Health & Social Care teaching facilities, Wakefield College has a dedicated healthcare simulation ward where students practice clinical skills in a controlled, safe environment. The model ward has several medical simulation mannequins which allow students to practice taking blood, inserting feeding tubes, taking blood pressure and other essential healthcare skills.
