Course Overview

This course is available for study at either Wakefield College or Selby College. The UK ranks as the seventh-largest tourism market in the world, contributing over £70 billion annually to the economy. With more than two million people employed in the Travel and Tourism sector across the country, there are abundant career opportunities both in the UK and internationally. By enrolling in this Travel and Tourism course, you will gain essential knowledge and qualifications to launch your career in this dynamic and growing industry. Throughout the year, we organize a variety of day trips and an annual residential trip, offering valuable industry insights and hands-on experience. The course structure combines a diverse range of learning methods, including classes, lectures, seminars, workshops, presentations, and independent research. You will have the unique opportunity to study in our purpose-built aircraft cabin room, where you can develop the skills and knowledge required for a career as Cabin Crew. The course will also incorporate digital resources, allowing you to research and study the latest trends and news in travel and tourism. Some lessons will take place in classrooms where you’ll prepare for real-world work in the industry, and you will gain proficiency in using industry-standard travel directories and manuals. Our strong links with major industry companies such as Fly Me, Jet2 Holidays, Travel Counsellors, and the Tourism Department provide students with the chance to learn from professionals with real-life experience. Additionally, we arrange a variety of visits and residential trips throughout the academic year. Past day visits have included trips to Chatsworth House, The Yorkshire Wildlife Park, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, and London. Previous overnight trips have taken students to destinations such as New York, Amsterdam, and Disneyland Paris (subject to availability). Please note: Work placement opportunities will be available as part of the course.

  • How You Will Be Assessed

    Assessment Methods

    Assessments will be diverse to give you multiple opportunities to showcase your knowledge and skills. You may be evaluated through practical tasks, short-answer questions, research assignments, written reports, and the creation of visual materials such as leaflets. Additionally, role-play activities will be used for observational assessments.

    For Level 3 students, there will be opportunities to conduct market research, case studies, and investigations, with findings presented in various formats such as reports, brochures, and presentations—similar to what you might encounter in professional settings within the industry. Some units at all levels may include online assessments.

  • Entry Requirements

    Level 3 Certificate/Diploma:

    4 GCSEs at Grade 9-4, including English and/or Maths, or a Level 2 qualification with a Merit Grade, plus Level 2/Grade 9-4 in English and/or Maths.

    Level 3 Introductory Diploma/Extended Diploma:

    5 GCSEs at Grade 9-4, including English and Maths, or

    A Level 2 qualification with a Merit Grade, plus Level 2/Grade 9-4 in English and Maths.

    Progression Opportunities

    Upon successfully completing the course with an appropriate pass grade in Maths and English, you will be able to progress to higher levels.

    You can also enhance your CV by undertaking additional qualifications related to the Travel and Tourism industry, such as Basic First Aid or Essential Food Hygiene. Some students may choose to learn a new foreign language or improve existing language skills. Additionally, many students continue their studies by progressing to Higher Education courses throughout the UK,
