Students holding the varsity trophy

Our three colleges recently came together for a day of friendly sports competition as part of the Group’s first-ever Varsity event.

Students from Wakefield College and Castleford College visited Selby College for a sporting face-off, with matches taking place throughout the day.

The students had the opportunity to try out our brand- new 3G football pitch, whilst rugby matches took place in our sports field behind.

In the sports hall, students played basketball, netball and badminton, and students from all colleges came together in the overhead spectator's area to cheer on their peers in their games

We also held a darts tournament in the afternoon, and the final event of the day was the strong person competition, with students flipping tyres, lifting ropes and having planking competitions.

The overall winner of the day was Selby College, with a triumphant total of 53 points across all the events. Special guests, Mika Ravalawa and Joe Westerman from Castleford Tigers Rugby Team, were also on hand to present students from Selby College with their winning plaque.

Closing the event, Local College Director at Selby College, James Pennington, said:

"It was fantastic to welcome students from across the Group to Selby College for our first-ever Varsity competition. With our brand-new 3G sports pitch recently completed, it provided the perfect setting for the day, as students took part in a wide range of activities - from football and darts to the strongest man competition. Following the success of this year’s event, we look forward to making Varsity an annual tradition.
