The Heart of Yorkshire Education Group’s Children’s University May-hem! event is returning to Castleford College this half-term, offering a jam-packed day for local children to discover a range of activities and learning opportunities.
The free event, which is open to both Children’s University members and non-members aged 5-14 and their families, will provide a wide range of exciting activities delivered by the College and local Learning Destinations.
This includes sessions by Little Zoo to You, Whitwood Girlguiding, Castleford Tigers Rugby and Cheerleading, Wakefield Museums, NCMM, Castleford Library and Heritage Group and Wakefield Young Astronomer.
Castleford College tutors will also be delivering activities across subject areas such as Automotive, Care & Early Years, Carpentry & Joinery, Hair & Beauty, Public Services and Sport.
The College’s next-generation I>innovate hub will also be open for attendees to try out Virtual Reality and drone equipment.
Taking place at Castleford College on Wednesday 27th May 2026, from 10am until 2pm, the event will give Children’s University members the opportunity to collect learning hours, whilst non-members aged 5-14 are able to attend and find out more about the programme.
Visitors are welcome to drop into the events which interest them the most, but the following two sessions will need to be booked in advanced and can be reserved by emailing:
- Carpentry - 10.30-12pm (8-14 years)
- Motor Vehicle Mechanics - 12.30-1.30pm (7-14 years)
James Pennington, Director of Learner Journey at the Heart of Yorkshire Education Group, said:
“Our Children’s University had been operational for 14 years now and our May-hem event is a key part of it, offering fun learning activities for local children and families. The day is about giving young people the chance to explore new interests, try hands-on activities and discover the exciting further education opportunities available to them in the future. We’re proud to work with our local Learning Destination partners to create a fun, engaging and enriching experience for everyone who attends, whilst also supporting the longer-term development of our Children’s University members.”
Children’s University promotes extra-curricular learning for young people across the district. As part of the initiative, pupils receive a ‘Passport to Learning’ which they use to collect codes each time they participate in a learning activity such as an after-school club, with the aim of collecting as many codes and hours as possible via the College and Learning Destinations.
